Founded in 1956, the college began to enroll students in undergraduate programs in 1977. Under the approval of the State Council, it was renamed as Fuyang Teachers College in 1978 and was among the first batch of higher-learning institutions to confer bachelor's degrees. In 2001, the college passed the Undergraduate Education Qualification Assessment conducted by the Ministry of Education, and was awarded the second prize of National Educational Achievements in 2005. In 2008, the college passed the Undergraduate Education Level Evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Education with “Grade A”, and was officially approved to offer Master's degrees in 2013.
